Know your rights if you are a party to an offence
Have you ever been in the wrong place at the wrong time, or been blamed for someone else’s actions. Just being wish someone who has committed a criminal offence or being in a place where guns, drugs or stolen property is found can lead to you being arrested as a party to the offence.
Even if you have no involvement in the activity that has lead to your arrest, it is important to know your rights and make sure you take advantage of them.
1. You have the right to speak to a lawyer. Even if you’ve done nothing wrong, make sure you speak to a lawyer before saying ANYTHING to the police or anyone else. Only you’re lawyer will act in your best interest and make sure that your rights are protected.
2. You have the right to remain silent. USE IT!! Since you don’t know what the police have as evidence or exactly how they believe you are connected to the offence, you won’t make it better by talking to the police but you can definitely make it worse. Speak to your lawyer. They will give you the proper advice.
No one plans to be arrested and charged but sometimes things occur which are beyond your control. Be prepared. Put my number in your contacts and if the unexpected occurs, call me and I will be there to help you deal with the charges.
